Research Paper Anxiety 101

Today I had to attend my nephew’s 4th birthday party. To steal a line from Sophia (Golden Girls) “Picture it, Sicily… 2007.” There I was with my Norton Anthology, notebook, and 2006’s America’s Best Short Fiction… in the middle of Chuck E Cheese’s. Let’s just say this is not the place, nor the activity to attempt if you want to avoid a headache.

But all in all, I did manage to get a chunk of reading done, and it sunk in. I read another story in what I believe will be an endless search for my 102 research paper, this time it was “Tatooizm” and I can’t remember the author. It was good, I’m quite sure I could do a straightforward literary analysis on it, but am not sure if I could do research on it. Furthermore, I am more than a little torn by the suggestion of going out beyond my norm.

What, exactly, is my norm? Is it Young Adult fiction? Is it Chick Lit? Supermarket Romances? Mystery? Classics? Science Fiction? Horror? True Crime? Travel Lit? Mythology? Foodie Lit? Memoir? African American Lit (too a very small degree)? I’m a bit like a reading bazaar, and I’ve supped at almost every table… that’s not to say I’ve read everything, just a large ammount of genres. So I am stuck.

Any suggestions?

Along with the other research papers, I also proposed a blog w/ a podcast for our media arts department as a project for multimedia design. My first task then, was checking to make sure that the blog wouldn’t have to be contributed to only by me. To test the multiple users feature on wordpress, I used my own school blog to add myself as an additional author.

Now that I know this, I can design the blog template, and talk to the woman who does the webstuff for the college and get wordpress installed there. Yipee!

Over the next fifteen weeks or so I will be working on not uno, not deux, but THREE!!! research papers. Ugh. Right? And not only that but they are all on completely different subjects. Lucky me they are all the same length, mwahahaha (or wait, have I just been insulted somewhere?!)

Anyhow we have, for your reading pleasure (or torture):

Astronomy 101: 5 page research paper on something of astronomical news/importance. I’m leaning towards the furor over the demotion of Pluto as one of our planets to a ‘dwarf planet.’ As in, why do we need it? Who’s for it, and who’s against it. I will be looking in my textbook, astronomy magazines, and news reports from the time period when Pluto was demoted.

French 101: 5 page research paper on something French. Francophone countries, French government, culture, oh my! I am leaning towards gastronomie and in particular, Les Halles the big market. I’m not sure where my sources will be from. I guess I will have to start in the library…

And finally, English 102. Take a short story. Find some literary criticism on it. Maybe some background on the author, such as style etc. Wrap it into an essay. I have nooo idea where I am going for this. But I know who I won’t be doing: no DWMs (hiphiphooray!)(although, that means I can’t do any more poking/prodding into Auden. Sniffle) No Chuck Palahniuk (barf). I’m sure I will find something, right? I read alot. more than alot, so I am bound to come across something. I’m considering Didion, but most of what I am coming across looks like creative nonfiction. The thing I love about English classes is that they don’t just give you permission to go to a bookstore/library, they demand it. So we shall see. Maybe I will do it on “Nicholas Was” by Neil Gaiman. Or something else by him, goodness knows that while he may be considered by some as merely ’science fiction’ or mainstream genre fiction, he has a depth to his writing that is most assuredly covered in this quote from my 102 textbook (Norton Intro to Lit Anthology 9th Ed pg 1)(note I’m so not MLA formatting this blog. Papers listed here will be formatted properly, but not the blog itself. Thanks) “Writing is not literature unless it gives to the reader a pleasure which arises not only from the things said, but from the way in which they are said.” Gaiman has such a curliqued way of writing, in and around a subject, bouncing mythology off of it in a way that would impress Campbell… it just makes me all tingly. (also, just in case you’re wondering… for this class, in an effort to make sure the plagarisers are found sooner, rather than later, we’re all keeping a diary of our research paper. mwaaaa I’ve got a one up on that, huh?)

One of the most integral parts of writing isn’t the writing itself, but the proofreading and revision of your essay. I can’t tell you how many times I have put my blood, sweat, and tears into a project, only to turn it in and then be destroyed by silly mistakes that could have been found out just by proofreading it and revisining it (one more time.) Sometimes once is not enough, as you will find in when you follow my link, when I revised essay three for Susan Lowry’s English 103 class and turned it in, as I was going through it with a fine toothed comb for this blog, I found EVEN MORE MISTAKES!! Which is why, proofreading and revision are always a good thing.

Remember back in the day when all you had to remember was the “Bibliography” at the end of your paper? You wrote down the name of your book, and the author and that was it. Your teacher accepted your paper with a pat on your head and you got your grade. Then miraculously one day you found yourself in college and they told you that you had to conform to MLA, APA, Chicago… and your brain kind of shut down. (or at least that’s what mine did.)

÷šI mean, how can you keep it straight? That’s why you should get yourself a good Style Manual. Mine is “A Pocket Style Manual” by Diana Hacker. It’s got tabs, and it’s fairly easy to reference, plus it’s lightweight. This is a huge plus, but an even bigger minus… it kind of has a tendency to get lost on my desktop.

When you finally have your books for your research project picked out here’s a very important tip:

Take down all the information you will need to cite your sources!

The Yale Daily News Guide to Writing College Papers (such a wonderful book) suggests that you keep a working bibliography. (pg 34) This will save you time in the long run, as you don’t want to find yourself as an instructor did, calling one of her instructors long distance–across states– and begging them to look up a book so that she could cite it in her Master’s or Doctoral thesis. Or a friend of mine’s who recently had to look up some 100 odd references just before a book went to print. A little bit of time during this first stage of research can save you a huge ammount of time later on.

When we get to taking notes, in my research I have found that taking notes is a very subjective thing. You must find what works for you. I am a copy paste if I am working online, or a huge quotational chunk typed directly into word while I am working. There was some mention of taking notes onto post its and then pasting them to your wall, but that seems just a tad too… Hollywood Television rendetion of schizoid student pushed over the edge by looming essay due… you know? I had this whole cinematic version of÷ša slightly pudgy, but cute, All-American÷šblonde girl poring over endless stacks of post it’s and then frenetically arranging and rearranging them on the offwhite space of her blank dorm room wall until she had them in perfect order. Then she sits back, pushes up the sleeves of her dingy, oversized college sweatshirt and begins to hammer out her essay on her laptop, pausing now and then to peer owlishly at the mural of multicolored post it’s laid out on the wall before her. Of course, her teacher weeps in pride and astonishment at how good her essay is… until he gets to the end. Because, our everystudent forgot the integral piece of information: citing her sources.

÷šDon’t forget to cite your sources. I hate to use tired old standards like “a stitch in time saves nine” but between you, me, and the four walls of my tiny office… where would you rather be with three hours to deadline and an essay due? Printing it out and happily unconcerned, or frantically trying to recall where the quote about Margot Kidder being found in a dazed and disoriented in someone’s backyard in 1996, or how that equates to the Superman Curse, and could I use that for this particular essay? Probably if I wasn’t so focused on Star Wars.

This isn’t supposed to be personal, but since I am giving a psuedo presentation on my failure of a blog tomorrow, er, today in less than 12 hours, I thought I’d share what I did this weekend. Me. Yep that’s right me.

I’ve done my research. I’ve done a little preliminary writing. And now I am in my favorite stage of the game: the procrastination stage. This is actually the worst part of the whole thing; and it usually sets its self up at the same time every project or semester. About half-way through I get mid-project/semester/paper/dishes doing/whatever ennui. (I like that word by the way, on-wee:  feeling of weariness and dissatisfaction. Yep.

So from now on, I will be posting about the ways I have been procrastinating. Mostly they involved children’s literature, a latte, and a quiet room. But sometimes they involve flash movies and the internet. I highly recommend the Ultimate Showdown. It’s for the kid in all of us.

On a serious note, procrastination can be the death of any paper. No matter how much research you have done or how well you write, if you don’t  write and continue to read The Hobbit and other fantasy novels whilst guzzling massive ammounts of Frappucino, you’re still not going to finish  your paper.

So what can you do?

Write. Talk to people about what you are writing; explain your thesis to roomates, parents, spouses, or partners. Or if you’re really really devious, you can explain it to your young children and enjoy the way their eyes glaze over. (Trust me, it’s fun!) Then write some more. It doesn’t matter if what you are writing sucks, a writing teacher once told me that all first drafts suck completely, so whatever. Once you are done you can tinker, but until then, just keep churning out the wordage.

Then you can have a break. I think I’ll try that. For every 400 words, I will read a book. That way I should be finished by the year 2039…
